2005-2006 PROJECTS

Fifth Grade Dance Experience - Year 3 (January & February)
Project Contact: Cliff Bird, Abram Lansing Elementary

The Fifth Grade Dance Experience Project was designed by three Partners in Dance members -- the Capital Region BOCES Arts & Enrichment Services, the Ellen Sinopoli Dance Company (ESDC) and the principal and 5th grade teachers of Abram Lansing Elementary School in Cohoes. The Year 3 project is a duplication of the initial one designed for the 2003-04 school year and repeated in 2004-05, thus providing three different groups of students this experience so far. The project provides both participatory and presentational aspects so that students gain an understanding of the art form from both vantage points. Activities include movement workshops for students prior to and following a performance by the Ellen Sinopoli Dance Company.

District-Wide Fourth Grade Residency (January - May)
Project Contact: Kim Engel, Ellen Sinopoli Dance Company

The District-Wide 4th Grade Dance Residency is a continuation of the Scotia-Glenville dance residency that was begun as a pilot project of Partners in Dance seven years ago. This year's project reinforces a long-standing relationship of the district with the Ellen Sinopoli Dance Company and includes a performance opportunity for participating students as well as five-day workshop residencies at each of the four schools in the district. It also includes a performance sharing by the students with their community and the mentorship of a neighboring district to begin and continue a similar program.

Mentoring Within and Between Districts (January - May)
Project Contact: Kim Engel, Ellen Sinopoli Dance Company

In the Mentoring Within and Between Districts project, the Scotia-Glenville Central School District (S-G CSD) will continue to mentor the Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake Central School District (BH-BL CSD) in a dance residency/performance project that has taken place in the S-G CSD for eight years. In year one of this project, Charlton Heights Elementary School was the pilot school for BH-BL CSD and, now in year two, Stevens Elementary has joined the project. It is anticipated that Pashley Elementary (the last elementary school in the district) will join the residency project next year after observing it as it happens this year. The project includes a performance opportunity for 4th grade students as well as a five-day workshop residency and a performance sharing by the students with their community.

Stories that Dance (February & March)
Project Contact: Chris Sheehan, Proctors

Proctor's offers a creative dance literacy project with The Northeast Ballet Company and four regional school classes each season. These classes will be involved in an intensive project that includes a week-long residency in the classroom with Darlene Myers and dancers from the Northeast Ballet Company. Students will write a story and learn to choreograph a dance for the story they have written. The four stories will then be transformed into a full-scale production of Stories That Dance at Proctor¹s. Students learn about literary elements, parts of speech, sequencing and character development, ballet and jazz terminology, choreography, collaboration and stage production.

Skidmore Summer Dance Workshop (June)
Project Contact: Maria McColl, Office of the Dean of Special Programs, Skidmore College

The Skidmore College Summer Dance Workshop with the Limón Dance Company is a three-week summer program designed for intermediate and advanced dancers, attracting participants from across the country and internationally. The Workshop will present a series of events at no charge to the local community including: three Lecture Demonstrations, five Master Classes and Open Rehearsals. In addition, Skidmore will partner with local organizations to offer specially designed classes to senior citizens and at risk youth. These events will expose the participating students and local community to a dance company of the highest caliber thereby educating and expanding our local dance audience in the Capital District Region and beyond.
